Tales of mythology are similarly dominated by the males of the story, the heroes, fighting wars and gaining fame and status and the Gods, powerful and vain, playing with the lives of the mortals that worship them. Throughout history, stories are told from the POV of the ‘winner’ and the other perspective is usually lacking sometimes even completely obliterated over the course of time. I would start this by saying Greek mythology is an area that I have only a brief spattering of knowledge of but like most people I’m familiar with the most famous stories, King Minos and the Minotaur being a story that I was briefly aware of although I’d never read about how the Minotaur came to exist so this was certainly an eye opener and another example of the Gods and how they meddle in the lives of those that worship them.įor me, there are two sides to every story. This is a beautifully told story, totally immersive, shocking and ultimately bittersweet. Here we have a reimagining of one of Greek mythology’s most famous stories. I really enjoyed Ariadne by Jennifer Saint and was also incredibly impressed to learn that this is a debut novel. My Five Word TL:DR Review : Two sides to every story

But, with access to all of Christie’s letters, papers and writing notebooks, as well as interviews with her grandson, daughter, son-in-law and their living relations, Thompson is able to unravel not only the detailed workings of Christie’s detective fiction, but the truth behind her private life as well. In this biography, Laura Thompson describes the Edwardian world in which she grew up, explores the relationships she had, including those with her two husbands and daughter, and investigates the mysteries still surrounding Christie’s life – including her disappearance in 1926.Īgatha Christie is a mystery and writing about her is a detection job in itself. For that, and for Laura Thompson’s new biography, we are all richer. In the end, Agatha Christie is portrayed here as a driven, at times vulnerable, woman who found what she wanted and needed to do with her life. It has been 100 years since Agatha Christie wrote her first novel and created the formidable Hercule Poirot. Thompson covers the disappearance uniquely, writing in a voice that Christie might have had while experiencing that strange time. is a pretty much perfect capturing of a life’ Kate Mosse, Book of the Year 2007 The author of the Somerset Maugham award-winning The Dogs: A Personal History of Greyhound Racing, and the brilliant biography Life In A Cold Climate: Nancy Mitford, Laura Thompson turns her highly acclaimed biographical skills to arguably the greatest crime writer in the world, Agatha Christie. Suspense builds as Tara relies on her wits and follows her heart to Chuuk, where she risks all to save Grammy’s butterflies. Progressing from clue to clue, Tara learns Grammy had made an amazing scientific discovery about the butterflies on Chuuk island, putting her life and the existence of the butterflies in peril. The letter leads Tara to Grammy’s house, where she finds 10 keys and more letters with cryptic clues urging her to protect the butterflies and trust no one. Then the first mysterious butterfly appears, followed by a special-delivery letter Grammy Claire wrote before she died. When her beloved Grammy Claire dies unexpectedly, Tara feels like a “hole is shredding up” her heart. Raised in a deteriorating Louisiana plantation house, Tara pretends her life is fine, but her impoverished Southern-belle mother hides from reality, her absent father has remarried, and her older sister is self-absorbed. The day following her grandmother’s funeral, butterflies begin visiting grieving 12-year-old Tara, who’s swept into a bizarre mystery involving her grandmother, butterflies and a small Pacific island. |
